The rookie ‘Polar Bear’ Pete Alonso just will not quit. On Monday night, he once again showed he’s well within the National League Home Run race as he hit two dingers to lead his team to gritty 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The blasts leave him on 47 home runs at the moment, putting him back ahead of Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich in the battle. Jacob deGrom was impervious on the mound as well in a game with massive NL Wild Card ramifications. He struck out 11 batters and only gave up a single run in seven innings of work. As a result of the win, the Mets remain four games behind the Cubs, who hold the second Wild Card place currently. The Diamondbacks are now 2.5 off the pace due to the defeat.
