The Baylor Bears had no interest whatsoever in letting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish repeat as NCAA Women’s Basketball Champions. And despite that, it took a late bucket from Chloe Jackson to hand them a 81-80 win, completing a nearly flawless 37-1 season that saw them sweep aside nearly all competitors.
That wasn’t the only big basket that Jackson hit either, with an earlier jumper falling that helped pile the pressure on the defending champs. Arike Ogunbowale had an opportunity to make it back-to-back nights of free throw drama at the end, but she missed the first of two free throws that essentially helped seal the third title win for the Bears under coach Kim Mulkey. Ogunbowale, the standout performer of the tournament ended the night with 31 points in the loss, while Jackson had 26.
