The home-team Atlanta Braves hit two home runs and plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth in Game 1 of their NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night, but in the end it wasn’t quite enough.
The Cardinals, on the back of a strong eighth and ninth of their own, were able to withstand the late charge and hold on for a 7-6 win in Atlanta that gives them a 1-0 lead in the series. After making three errors in the early going and allowing Atlanta to lead twice, the Cardinals got some momentum when Paul Goldschmidt, who was impervious defensively, hit a home run to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Another run in that eighth inning came and then four more in the ninth to give them a 7-3 lead. But home runs from Ronald Acuna, Jr. and Freddie Freeman gave the Braves life only to see Carlos Martinez survive and gain his team the victory.
