Chiefs Smash Texans Despite Early 24-Point Hole

Jonathan Grant | January 13th, 2020

Quite honestly, if there was one team in the NFL you had to pick to be staring down a 24-0 deficit would you pick anyone other than the Kansas City Chiefs? If you answered yes, you’re either crazy or just don’t know enough about the game, as was evidenced on Sunday afternoon when they came back in stunning fashion to go on and smash the Houston Texans 51-31.

Having fallen behind 24-0 inside the first 25 minutes of the game, it looked like all hope of them advancing and hosting the Tennessee Titans next week was gone. But they never stopped. Deshaun Watson was spectacular for the Texans, throwing for two touchdowns and racking up 388 yards, but he was not match for Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes had five TD tosses, with four of them coming consecutively to put them up 28-24 by the end of the first half. An attempted fake punt that went awry by the Texans in the second quarter helped the momentum turn for good, leading to six Chiefs drives in a row resulting in touchdowns. In winning by the margin they did, the Chiefs became the only team to have ever gone down by 20 to still figure out a way to win by 20. Crazy stuff, that’s all you can really say.
