Never one to be outdone, Gerritt Cole made sure to announce himself on the big stage as he dominated the Tampa Bay Rays last night in the Houston Astros’ 3-1 home win in Game 2 of their ALDS series. Cole, like Justin Verlander a night before, threw an absolute peach of a game.
He struck out 15 batters over the course of seven innings and didn’t surrender a single run. That took full advantage of Alex Bregman’s solo home run, and singles that drove in runs from both Martin Maldonado and Carlos Correa. With a 3-0 deficit in the ninth inning, the Rays did load the bases and push one run across the plate, but it was not enough in the end. Like the Twins, the Rays now have to win three next three games in order to move into the ALCS.
