It was rarely easy for Chase Elliott on Sunday afternoon at Watkins Glen, particularly in the second half of the race at the road course with former champion Martin Truex, Jr. breathing down his neck. But when the dust had settled following 90 laps, it was the second generation racer that had captured his second checkered flag in a row at the track, repeating his first-ever win that came last season in the process.
The stats show Elliott, driver of the #9 like his famous father, Bill, dominated the race, leading 80 laps from the pole, but that doesn’t say it all. For the entire final 40-lap final stage, Truex was right on his bumper, pressuring him. But in the end, it was Elliott winning and Truex once again being forced to settle for runner-up, just as he did last year as well.
