Naomi Osaka might not have shown any mercy whatsoever on the court, during play, against 15 year-old Coco Gauff on Saturday night, but that did not stop the defending US Open Champion from giving the teenager a warm embrace and some good, old fashion sportsmanship after the decisive match.
Osaka dominated from the get-go, winning the first set 6-3 and then stepping it up to throttle the younger 6-0 in the second to take the match. It’s rare nowadays to see a true champion in any sport, but that’s what Osaka is proving to be. Both on and off the court, she has played with pride. Gauff will learn from that for sure, and we can expect to see much of the same from her for years to come as well.
