It was a very special night in St. Louis on Wednesday night as the NHL regular season began in earnest with the defending champions raising their banner against the Washington Capitals, the team that had won it prior to them.
Despite the banner raising and the good time had by all, however, it was the visiting Capitals that came to town and ruined the party to take a 3-2 win away from the opener. And it had come after the Blues had started oh so well. Two goals came for them inside the first eight minutes, one from Sammy Blais and the other from Alex Pietrangelo. But Alex Ovechkin got the Caps back in it later in the first period before they tied it up in the second through Dmitry Orlov on a power play. The score would remain locked at 2-2 until the overtime period, where Jakub Vrana scored to hand the Blues a 3-2 loss to begin their defense of their crown.
