Barcelona came into their match at home to Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday in big-time need of a victory. While they were far from classic in their showing, they did just about eke it out in the end, doing so due to a 71st minute strike from Ivan Rakitic. That lone goal was enough to give them a 1-0 lead and vault them back to the top of La Liga for now.
Of course, Real Madrid can go back to the summit with a win next time out, and that club controls the race for the title, meaning they can win it by winning all of their remaining games. In England, the Premier League kept up its own torrid schedule as Tottenham took on London rivals West Ham at home. Two second-half goals, one an own goal from Thomas Soucek after 64 minutes and an 82nd minute finish from Harry Kane gave Spurs a 2-0 win over the Hammers. The win moved Tottenham up to seventh for now, though they have a long way to go in order to get into the Champions League places they coveted so much.
