The NHL is in a unique spot that many of the leagues around the world are not having to deal with. While others are being forced to adjust and ‘pivot,’ the NHL is really having a tough time due to the fact that it has two countries with substantial numbers of teams in it: Canada and the United States. Due to this, it makes things quite complicated.
Because of the current travel restrictions and difficulties, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that realignment was a possibility for their new season, as they hope to keep teams closer to home and reduce the amount of traveling. The schedule, though, remains undecided, but it would be no surprise to see only regional teams face off in the ‘regular’ season before they returned to Canadian soil to contest the postseason once more.
