Biles Pulls Out, Team USA Basketball Bounces Back

Jonathan Grant | July 28th, 2021

The big story out of Tokyo the last day or so has revolved around Simone Biles’ presence or lack thereof on the gymnastics mat. The global megastar came into these Olympics with enormous expectations given her incredible talents, and that has in part led to her bowing out. In order to work on her mental health, the American dropped out of the team final in which the Americans lost to Russia. She has also decided to not take part in the individual all-around as well so that obviously will leave the floor for someone else to take.

Elsewhere, all three Team USA basketball teams picked up wins. The women got a test from Nigeria, but they ultimately came out on top 81-72. They were led by A’ja Wilson’s 19 points and 13 rebounds. The American men bounced back from a loss to France in the opener to crush lightweight Iran 120-66. Damian Lillard had 21 points against the minnows. The women’s 3 on 3 teams also won on the day, beating France 18-16, to clinch a place in the final. In the pool, Katie Ledecky rebounded to win the 1500m freestyle to win gold. She had finished fifth in the 200m and that was considered quite the shock at the time. In the ‘other’ pool, the American women’s water polo team suffered a rare loss when they fell to Hungary 10-9 in group play. It was the first Olympic loss for the squad since 2008, but it does not hamper their chances to move on to the knockout rounds.
