It’s rare that we talk about how good a player was when he was on the losing side. Even in a game where a living legend like Tom Brady had 381 yards, that’s what people are doing. That’s due to the fact that Taylor Heinicke was extremely impressive for the Washington Football Team in just his second-ever appearance with them. Starting in a playoff game is tough for any rookie, let alone someone that wasn’t even a starter less than a year ago in a startup league.
Heinicke put together over 350 yards combined and had a TD in the air and on the ground, an amazing one, as he kept an average Washington team within touching distance of the truthfully much-better Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady’s weapons were just too much, with Leonard Fournette providing nearly 100 yards on the ground and Mike Evans hauling in six catches for 119 yards. But the lasting story might just be that Washington has a QB for the future now in Heinicke despite their eventual 31-23 defeat.
