The first round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to take place, and Monday was an especially important evening for the Boston Bruins’ hopes. Down 1-0 in their series with the Washington Capitals, they knew they needed a win. Having taken two leads only to lose them, it didn’t look like being their day when Garnet Hathaway scored his second goal seven minutes into the third period to hand the Caps a 3-2 lead.
But the Bruins had other plans as Taylor Hall scored to level up the game with three minutes to go and send it to OT. Once there, they didn’t have to wait too long. Brad Marchand scored the winner 39 seconds into the extra period to knot up the series at one game apiece. Elsewhere, the Carolina Hurricanes got their series off to winning start with a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators. It was 2-2 after the second period, but the third was all one way as Carolina poured three goals on the Preds. Nino Niederreiter scored the eventual winner before Jordan Staal (who had scored one earlier) and Andrei Svechnikov put the game to bed for them.
