The Montreal Canadiens just came out of a grueling series with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they didn’t let that show too much on Wednesday evening as they took a 1-0 advantage over the Winnipeg Jets with a 5-3 win. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Staal set the tone early, slotting home within the first five minutes and ten seconds. Nick Suzuki added another before the period ends, giving them a 3-1 lead at the interval. They twice matched goals from the Jets in the third period, keeping their comfort level fairly high.
Meanwhile, Game 2 out West was taking place between the Colorado Avalanche and the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Having been hammered the first time around, Vegas put up a much tougher fight this time. But they still fail 3-2 in overtime to the Avalanche. Mikko Rantanen found the net after just a couple of minutes in the extra period, meaning Colorado can now head to Vegas and try to close out the Golden Knights with wins in the next two encounters.
