For the eighth time in his career, and second consecutive year, Novak Djokovic is your Australian Open champion. The Serbian didn’t have it all his way in a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Dominic Thiem, requiring a rally at one stage to thwart the upset, but in the end he did as he always seems to do: rise above it and take home the crown.
In doing so, Djokovic laid claim to his 17th major trophy as a result, placing him three off the pace of Roger Federer atop that statistic. At one point, Thiem had won six games in a row, threatening to defeat Djokovic as he had done to Rafa Nadal in the quarters. But Djokovic used his know-how, and some motivation from an argument with the umpire perhaps, to turn it around and decisively win it in the end.
