Dos A Cero: USA Beats Mexico By Familiar Score

Jonathan Grant | November 13th, 2021

Dos a cero. Two-nil. Whatever you want to call it, it just keeps happening to Mexico in World Cup Qualifiers in the United States. It happened on Friday night, though it was in a different building this time. No longer in Columbus, this one was in Cincinnati. But that didn’t change things as the Americans took a big step toward clinching a World Cup spot and gaining respect from their CONCACAF rivals.

Christian Pulisic was fit enough to come off the bench, and he was the spark needed, scoring from a header after 74 minutes. Weston McKennie, another of America’s European-based stars, then made it 2-0 when he coolly slotted home after a bit of luck in the 85th minute. The USA is now tied on points atop the ‘Octagonal’ group with Mexico while Canada is one point behind and still unbeaten through seven games. The top three will automatically head to Qatar while the fourth will have a last-chance playoff to get themselves in.
