It’s early on in the 2020/21 NBA season, but the team to beat the moment has to be the Philadelphia 76ers. Plenty of teams are having their ups and downs currently, but the Sixers are one of the few that are thriving. They kept that up, running their home record up to 6-1, on Tuesday night as they held off the Miami Heat in overtime on the back of 45 points from Joel Embiid. The Heat were, it must be said, playing without a few of their usual players, but it was still quite the performance from the Sixers’ center.
He put up a double-double with the aforementioned 45 points and also had 16 rebounds to go along with. His clutch baskets in the overtime period as well as having a perfect third quarter showing enabled the Sixers to get the win. As did little-known Dakota Mathias, who helped the early-season MVP favorite by nailing a three-pointer, the only shot he made in the game, with 26 seconds to go to hand them the 137-134 win. That pushed them to 8-4 through 12 games while the Heat fell to 4-5.
