The inevitable, honestly, has now been confirmed via NCAA president Mark Emmert. There will be no championships sponsored by the NCAA for fall sports in 2020, as he announced to the nation on Thursday. The reason for it, of course, is due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it does go a bit deeper than that.
It is largely because over half of the schools in the organization have decided to forgo sports for the moment, meaning that they can’t put on a ‘legitimate championship.’ This affects every fall Division I sport other than FBS football, which could still see a champion crowned if the College Football Playoff goes on. Who knows how that will go as lots could change in the coming weeks and months.
