The game of soccer could be in for a huge change in the months and years to come if current plans do indeed unfold. That’s because the long-rumored, so-called European Super League is actually being talked about by the ‘big clubs. That was confirmed officially on Sunday by the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United. They are said to be joined by ten others currently; with that group looking to break away from the current league system and Champions League altogether.
By doing this, these clubs would no longer be splitting the money with the smaller clubs out there, giving them nearly exclusive control of the game. In response, many teams and individuals have spoken out. But perhaps the biggest disapproval comes from UEFA. They have threatened to ban any players involved, so there is a chance that there would be no Euros or World Cups for anyone that crosses over the Rubicon. We’ll just have to wait and see how this turns out, but quite honestly, it looks like greed might just ruin another sporting venture once and for all.
