Gonzaga Escape, Set Up Baylor Title Tilt

Jonathan Grant | April 4th, 2021

After a wild, wild month of March Madness, we have somehow ended up with two #1 seeds in the NCAA Men’s title game. Those two #1 seeds are none other than undefeated Gonzaga and Baylor. We’ll start with the Bulldogs, who were more than put to the test on Saturday night in their Final Four clash with UCLA. The Bruins were the tournament’s surprise team, turning from an afterthought as a #11 seed and into a serious threat. So much so that it took the previously 30-0 Bulldogs a buzzer-beating three-pointer to defeat them in overtime by a score of 93-90. Jalen Suggs was the hero that knocked that shot down from way downtown, sending his team to the national championship game and giving them a perfect 31-0 record heading into it.

Johnny Juzang, who had 29 total points, had scored two to tie the game at 90 apiece with only three ticks remaining, but Suggs’ effort from way behind the three-point line was banked in and sent the Bulldogs past the Bruins in an epic game. In the first of the two Final Four matchups of the day, things weren’t nearly as tight as the Baylor Bears coasted past the Houston Cougars 78-59. An explosive 45-20 opening half was plenty enough for them as they utilized five double-digit scorers, including two that came off the bench. Jared Butler had 17 to lead the way while Davion Mitchell put up 12 and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Houston’s Marcus Sasser had a game-high 20, but he was one of just two Cougars to get into double digits on a rough night for them that saw them eliminated from the tourney as a result. On Monday, Gonzaga will look to complete history as they take on Baylor in the title tilt.
