Guardians Win Sixth Straight, Cards Battery Makes History

The Cleveland Guardians know that there might realistically be just one way for them to make it to the postseason this year, and they sure are playing like it at the moment. It’s win the AL Central or basically bust currently, and the Guardians are looking like they are going to take the division after they won for the sixth straight game on Wednesday to make it a four-game edge over the Chicago White Sox (and a five-game advantage over the Minnesota Twins, too).

The Guardians trailed 3-1 to the LA Angels through the top of the fifth, but they came back with aplomb. Tyler Freeman hit a game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh and an inning later Jose Ramirez hit the go-ahead two-run blast to hand them a 5-3 win that puts them a step closer to the playoffs. Elsewhere, the St. Louis Cardinals pushed their lead in the NL Central up to eight games by taking down the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 at home. Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Arenado each had solo blasts and Albert Pujols had an insurance RBI double in the eighth as well, but the big story was the battery of Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina. The pitcher-catcher pair made their 325th start together in the victory, setting a record that had stood since 1975. The next closest in the Majors is ridiculously far from them, with Willson Contreras and Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs at 105. So that shows just how big of a deal this accomplishment truly is from these two.
