Hayward Opts Out Of Boston Contract

Jonathan Grant | November 20th, 2020

The silly season in the NBA just keeps on going and going. The latest cog in the wheel is Gordon Hayward, who it was announced on Thursday afternoon, will not be opting in for another season in Boston. The Celtics forward will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday, effective at 6PM, with him being able to pick from any team he chooses as a result of that status.

Officially speaking, he’s the #1 free agent on the board this offseason, and he comes off a season in which he averaged over 17 points per game in 53 outings. He’s had his share of injury troubles over the years, so that has slowed his production down and hindered Boston’s success at times as he’s seen as a valuable piece to stretch the floor with. It’s being reported that he has three main possibilities at the moment. One of them would be to sign a longer-term deal with the Celtics. Another is to go to a team with lots of space in the cap like the Hawks or Knicks. He could also lobby for a sign-and-trade deal to allow the Celtics to land something in return. Which ultimately happens is up in the air for now, and it could stay that way for a while yet.
