Rory McIlroy had a good day on the links on Thursday at the the Travelers Championship, but Mackenzie Hughes had a great day. The relative unknown shot a ridiculous -10 60 in the opening round to take a three-shot lead over McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Viktor Hovland. He had birdies on ten holes and three of his last four, but he did leave a chance at 59 a little bit short (OK, a lot short), so he will be kicking himself a bit for that.
McIlroy had six birdies and an eagle on his day, as many welcomed the sight of one of the world’s best golfers to the big table. The overall scores were tremendously low on day 1 at the TPC River Highlands, with the field averaging a 68.5. That means if you were -1 you lost strokes to virtually the entire field. It should also be mentioned that after one round of play that Phil Mickelson is solidly in contention having shot -6. He’ll be hoping to follow that up with three more big rounds to be a contender down the stretch this weekend.
