American tennis may just have found, finally, its newest star. Well, besides Coco Gauff, who is great but still has a lot of growing to do. That’s because 21-year old Sofia Kenin just won the Australian Open, clinching her first-ever major win by defeating unsung but still two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Having lost the first set, the American had her back firmly to the wall. She was even tied at two games apiece in the third set, staring 40-love down the barrel. But she rallied and ultimately wouldn’t be beaten in a game again, taking the crown. It looked as if she will move to #7 now in the world rankings as a result. If so, she would be the earliest American to crack the top ten since Serena did it all the way back in 1999.
