Yusei Kikuchi came into Thursday’s meeting with the Houston Astros as a pedestrian pitcher in the Major Leagues. He was 8-16 overall with an ERA over 5, so what he did in leading his Seattle Mariners to the win on the day was remarkable. He took a no-hitter into the eighth before Carlos Correa’s double-ended his quest for a 3-2 count.
Kikuchi then stranded him, preserving a 1-0 lead that Taylor Trammell had earned via a solo home run. Trammell then made a sliding catch to seal the win and end the game, giving Seattle a 1-0 win over the Astros that improved their record to 14-12, half a game above their AL West foes and two off of the A’s in first.
