It is now official. Liverpool are Premier League champions for the very first time after Manchester City’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea on Thursday confirmed what we knew was inevitable. With City, the former champion’s, loss, Liverpool have clinched the title the earliest any team in English soccer history has (games-wise, obviously not during the calendar year).
It’s a first PL title for them, but it’s also a first top-division title for them since 1990, a run of 30 years that ended up seeing thousands of fans flood the streets outside their home ground of Anfield. The game itself was a fine spectacle that saw Chelsea take a massive victory in their own right. The first goal was scored by American international Christian Pulisic, who showed pace, maturity, and trickery as he ran away from the City defense. Kevin De Bruyne scored a sumptuous free kick in the second half to knot it up at one apiece, but a penalty kick for a handball (and a subsequent red card for Fernandinho) was City’s final downfall. Willian scored from the spot, giving Chelsea the win that saw them play a role yet again in deciding the winner of the PL title.
