Bob Baffert always seems to find a way to win the Kentucky Derby. Usually (he had won it six times before Saturday’s event, including last year with Authentic in the delayed running) it comes as his horse is one of the big favorites. This time, though, that was not the case. Medina Spirit was not a favorite, coming in at 12-1 to win.
Yet when it came down to the stretch, it was the colt that held off the charging pack to take home the honors and hand Baffert a record seventh win. Jockey John Velasquez was on board, going back-to-back in the past eight months or so. Despite fears he might be passed, Medina Spirit led from wire to wire, holding off Mandaloun, Hot Rod Charlie, and prerace fav Essential Quality to give the successful trainer yet another victory.
