Novak Djokovic said it was a relief to have it over. His quest to win all four grand slam championships had come to an end, but it didn’t end with him having accomplished it. That’s because Daniil Medvedev had other plans on Sunday in New York, sweeping aside one of the most dominant tennis champions of all time 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Medvedev even apologized to the crowd and his opponent for denying Djokovic the distinction of winning all four in the same calendar year for the first time since 1969, such was the specialness of the event. Medvedev had twice fallen short in major finals before this victory, and one of those came at the hands of Djokovic back at the Australian Open. Medvedev was simply impervious in the tournament, dropping only one set as he strolled toward a well-deserved win.
