It took him a long, long time, but Lionel Messi has finally captured a trophy with the Argentina national team. Having won title after title and award after award with Barcelona, the 34 year-old forward finally got one with his country thanks to a 1-0 victory on Saturday over Brazil that handed him and his nation the Copa America.
The win is the first trophy the nation as a whole has won in 28 years, and it denied a Brazilian side that had been unbeaten in the tournament ahead of the clash. Messi had scored four goals and recorded five assists in the tourney ahead of the final, helping him land the Golden Boot award, but it was Angel di Maria that won it for them. He took advantage of a defensive error to lob Ederson, giving Argentina enough to win it despite a late onslaught by the hosts to try and equalize.
