Most people had assumed that the Gonzaga Bulldogs would be the top seed in the NCAA Tournament heading into Sunday. Those people were indeed right as the bracket was revealed for the 68-team extravaganza due to begin on Thursday. But that’s not the only bit of news from the day, as five teams won their conference tourneys to guarantee their way into the Big Dance. Among those were Illinois, who also clinched one of the #1 seeds, Houston, Alabama, Colgate, and St. Bonaventure.
Those schools were the last five to lock in their places, confirming who would be automatically going to Indianapolis for what promises to be a unique tourney given the Covid era’s circumstances. Back to Gonzaga, though, as they became just the fifth team to head to the NCAA’s with an unbeaten record since Indiana won it all with one themselves back in 1975. The other #1 seeds were Baylor, Illinois, and Michigan. As part of the protocols for the tournament, four teams have been put on standby in the event that a team can’t play due to Covid-19’s effects. The tournament’s ‘First Four’ tips off on Thursday with Drake taking on Wichita State and UCLA meeting Michigan State being the two headliners.
