One day after proclaiming that March Madness would go on, the NCAA turned around and went in the opposite direction on Thursday, canceling the NCAA Tournaments, as well as all winter and spring sports entirely. Some have questioned the move, including Mark Few, who wanted to try and postpone it.
However, the NCAA has deemed it necessary to go ahead and make it clear that there will be no games or traveling done at this time. It’s a bold decision to cancel it outright, but at least they are leaning toward safety and precaution. They could have went on with the plan to play in empty arenas, but it is apparent that it quickly was frowned upon given circumstances elsewhere. One potential solution to the problem created by having no championships decided has been offered by UConn Women’s Basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who believes that seniors should be given an extra year of eligibility. It would be the right thing to do in all of these sports, so maybe the NCAA will listen to reason and allow them to come back if they choose to do, that is!
