The NFL has never exactly been a ‘progressive’ sort of league. Sure, it has been quicker to change than the MLB has, but it has also not stood up to the NBA in that regard. With this latest idea, though, it does show a willingness to improve and make the game a bit more exciting in some instances.
The proposal is to eliminate the current onside kick and replace it with a 4th-and-15 play, according to sources. The Eagles are the team that put this into motion, hoping that teams could begin on their own 25. Ostensibly, this means if converted, they would have 60 yards to go for a touchdown. It’s also being reported that a team could use it just twice in a game and that a normal onside would still be legal should a team choose to use one instead.
