We do our best to stay away from politics and the like here, but this one is so interesting that it has to be mentioned. The NFL has long coveted a way to bring equality about in the sport, at least on paper, anyway. The infamous ‘Rooney Rule’ has been in place for years, though the level of success it has had has to be openly questioned.

The stated idea is for teams to be given additional picks in the draft if they hire a ‘minority’ candidate for either the GM or head coach role. Apparently they are willing to give teams ten selections for a GM hire and six more for a head coach, giving a team the opportunity to have 16 total picks. They would also reward other coaching positions as well, though those would come with a lesser ‘reward.’ Losing minority candidates could also lose you picks, so there is a lot to this and it obviously is advanced to have gotten this far into consideration. Five of the last 52 hires between GM’s and coaches have turned out to go to minority candidates (three coaches, two GM’s), so the league feels that this needs to be fixed. We’ll let you decide how you feel about this, but it does look like it has a chance of happening.
