It was a good night to be a ranked team on Thursday night as a few got their 2021 college football seasons off to a winning start. The most notable match-up on the evening featured #4 Ohio State, and they were put to the test by the Minnesota Golden Gophers before ultimately prevailing 45-31. Down 14-10 at the half, the Buckeyes scored three TD’s in the third and five for the rest of the game to create some distance between themselves and the would-be upset artists.
CJ Stroud led the way for the Buckeyes with 294 yards on 13-22 passing. He had four touchdowns and one interception. Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim led the way for his team with 30 carries and two touchdowns for a total of 163 yards before injury forced him out of the game. The Buckeyes weren’t the only ranked team getting underway on the evening, and they weren’t the only ones to win, either. #22 Coastal Carolina rolled past the Citadel 52-14 while #24 Utah crushed Weber State 40-17. #25 Arizona State also had a comfortable time of it, rolling past Southern Utah 41-14. UCF, under Gus Malzahn in his debut, came from behind to down Boise State 36-31 in a thriller as well.
