It was always going to be tough to keep pace with the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2021 season. Both teams recorded well over 100 wins, so you can’t fault a team there. But the San Diego Padres’ fall-off was way too much to see manager Jayce Tingler keep his job in the end.
Though they had fallen out of contention for the NL West crown heading into September, they were a game ahead on the ninth for the second NL Wild Card spot. Ultimately, however, they finished 79-83 and were out of the running for the place the Cardinals eventually claimed with seven games to go. Sure, the Cardinals went on a great run, but the Padres also offered up nothing in response. They ended up 28 games off the back of the Giants, too, so that doesn’t exactly look good. With players like Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis, Jr. on the team, the new manager will have plenty to work with and be expected to bring more postseason success come 2022 and beyond.
