In his first tournament since turning the big 5-0, Phil Mickelson is making the most of it, proving he still has some gas left in the tank to play with the young guys. He leads after two rounds of the Travelers Championship with an overall score of -13 having turned in an impressive 63 on Friday to take a one shot lead into the weekend.
He had begun the day four shots back from the leader at the TPC River Highlands, but he used his experience and guile to maneuver around the course and outdo young, heavy hitters like Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. He leads by one stroke over fellow American Will Gordon and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, who had led after Thursday’s opening round. Multiple players sit at -9 and -8, respectively, with McIlroy being among them as we head into the weekend of another tournament that looks like it will produce an exciting finish. It’s the third straight week where we can say that, and it’s a joy to be able to see not only golf but good, competitive action on our screens.
