It shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise that Cade Cunningham was selected #1 overall by the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night. The 2021 NBA Draft had lots of big-time talent, though, according to various sources, so going first among this class is a big accolade. Cunningham was a premier scorer at the collegiate level for Oklahoma State, averaging more than 20 points per game in a very tough Big 12 conference. Jalen Green went #2 to the Houston Rockets while the #3 pick was made by Cleveland.
They selected Evan Mobley after multiple teams had attempted to trade up and switch places. The Toronto Raptors tabbed Scottie Barnes in the #4 spot and Jalen Suggs, the Gonzaga alum, was drafted by the Orlando Magic at #5. That was not all that went on in the NBA on the day, however, as the Los Angeles Lakers also made a splash via the trade market. According to sources, they have landed Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Montrezl Harrell, Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and a #22 pick from the 2021 Draft as well (which ended up being Isaiah Jackson). It’s a big deal for both teams; it could allow the Lakers to contend right away and the Wizards might just get a lot better by ‘spreading the load’ around.
