There are a lot of controversial names in the world of sports. One of those is Rick Pitino, who is set to make a return to American college basketball in the very near feature. That’s because it was announced on Saturday that Pitino was the newest coach of the Iona Gales. Pitino has not coached in the US since 2017 when he was let go by Louisville due to a scandal in which they were alleged to have left $100,000 for a potential signee. He is the only coach in the history of the NCAA to win the national championship with two schools.
On top of his duties as Iona coach, he will be finishing the season out with Greek team Panathinaikos, whom he has coached since December of 2018. He has some big shoes to fill at the program, with former coach Tim Cluess stepping down due to health reasons. Between 2012 and 2019, Cluess led them to either a regular season or conference title, meaning Pitino will be expected to hit the ground running.
