It’s been a wild season in Spain’s La Liga, and it all came to a close at the top of the table on Thursday when Real Madrid were crowned champions of the 2019-20 campaign thanks to a 2-1 victory over Villarreal at home. Both goals, one of which came from a penalty, were from Karim Benzema, one of the world’s best yet most underrated stars.
The Frenchman has 21 league goals to his name, along with eight assists, and has largely carried the team on his back at times. Of course, Sergio Ramos has done that as well, to be fair. The win was the 10th consecutive for Real, and with a Barcelona loss to Osasuna concurrently, it means their advantage is too big to overcome now. It is their 34th league title and first since 2017, while it is the second they have achieved under manager Zinedine Zidane.
