Tennessee, Texas A&M Record Big Wins While Contenders Stutter

Jonathan Grant | September 25th, 2022

It was a very, very wild weekend across the college football landscape in week 4 with some being fortunate to come out unscathed and others not being so lucky. In the SEC, a pair of match ups between ranked foes took place with Tennessee and Texas A&M coming out on top. The #11 Volunteers won at home over Florida, holding off a furious late charge by the #20 Gators to win 38-33 to move to 4-0 on the season. Hendon Hooker cooked the visitors’ defense to the tune of well over 400 total yards (349 passing and 112 rushing) and three total TD’s as the Vols continued their fine start.

All for Tennessee

In Arlington, it was the #23 Aggies that prevailed over the #10 Arkansas Razorbacks in the Southwest Classic by a score of 23-21. Texas A&M were down 14-0 early, but they scored 23 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to move to 3-1 and 1-0 in the conference. Elsewhere, #22 Texas fell on the road to Texas Tech 37-34, #25 Miami were shocked by visiting MTSU 45-31, and #6 Oklahoma were upset 41-34 by Kansas State at home. Those were the only ranked teams to fall on the weekend, but there were plenty of other scares, as the likes of #1 Georgia, #5 Clemson (who beat Wake Forest in 2OT), #4 Michigan, #7 USC, and #15 Oregon were all pushed to the brink of collapse before finding a way to see of ‘lesser’ opposition. With Georgia’s struggles at home to Kent State and Alabama’s lopsided win over Vandy, plus Ohio State, ranked #3, easily winning over Wisconsin, we could see some movement at the top as far as rankings are concerned.
