MLS is well and truly back, as the tournament name indicates. Also the fact that the regular season continues on Wednesday night. Tuesday night, though, was all about wrapping up the tournament down in the Orlando ‘bubble,’ and it saw the Portland Timbers raise the trophy, claim the prize money, and seal a place in the lucrative CONCACAF Champions League as a result.
The Timbers got off to a running start as Larrys Mabiala scored 37 minutes in. The game would be leveled up 12 minutes later for Orlando City, however, as Nani set up Mauricio Pereyra’s equalizer. From there, with the score knotted at one apiece, the Timbers would retake the lead with around 25 minutes to go. Dario Zuparic scrambled home one of the scrappiest winning goals you’ll ever see, handing the Timbers the victory in a strange and surreal tournament.
