Two-Minute Drill: Adesanya/Pereira Made Official, NBA Rumors

Jonathan Grant | August 6th, 2022

1st Down: The main event for UFC 281 has officially been announced, and it will be a middleweight world title fight pitting defending champion Israel Adesanya against kickboxing rival Alex Pereira. The champion has been on top of the throne since 2019, and he will now take on a man that has beaten him twice in pure kickboxing rules. This, however, is MMA, and it’s been years since the two have clashed, so the idea that Pereira will automatically have the advantage is a little bit too much. That being said, Adesanya will be something to see, for sure, at MSG come November.

2nd Down: The NBA has a lot of big-time questions currently up in the air, with the status of a number of superstars uncertain. That has led teams to scramble, with reports linking the Lakers, Knicks, and Jazz together as they sought to figure out a way to maneuver a deal that would have seen Russell Westbrook move to Utah and Donovan Mitchell go to the Knicks. That deal, though, didn’t ultimately happen, and it’s being reported now that trade talks are quiet on those fronts. Another deal that doesn’t seem too close to happening is that of Kevin Durant’s. Sources indicate that teams around the league are not willing to do the deal due to Brooklyn’s very high asking price for the sharpshooter. With four years left on his deal in the Big Apple, the team have all the leverage, and it will take a truly special offer for them to ship him out.

3rd Down: Miguel Cabrera moved to calm some of the media storm around him on Friday, insisting to reporters that he would not be leaving the team until 2023 when his current deal runs out with the Detroit Tigers. This news comes after it seemed as if he was considering retirement due to knee issues. However, the 39 year-old wants to play until he’s 40, and he’ll hope to show similar form to what he has throughout his illustrious Major League career.

4th Down: The European club soccer season is underway as of Friday night, with both Arsenal and Bayern Munich beginning their respective campaigns with impressive away victories. Arsenal won 0-2 against Crystal Palace in a London derby, with Gabriel Martinelli’s 20th minute goal and a late Marc Guehi own goal proving enough for the Gunners. Bayern began life without Robert Lewandowski in Frankfurt, and they smashed Eintracht 6-1, with five of those goals coming in the first 45 minutes. Jamal Musiala scored two of them while new signing Sadio Mane also got on the scoresheet. Bayern have not failed to lose in each of their last 11 Bundesliga openers.
