Two-Minute Drill: Braves, Phillies Keep Charging

Jonathan Grant | June 11th, 2022

1st Down: For a while, it looked as if the New York Mets were going to be the only team in contention from the NL East. However, the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies are trying to change that, as they each have put together long winning streaks recently to get back into the hunt. The Braves, by virtue of a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday evening, have won nine in a row now while the Phillies, following a 7-5 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks have taken eight in a row to get themselves back to .500. The Braves are still 6.5 behind the Mets and the Phillies are 9 back, but they are at least back to some relevance now and can fight to claw that back or potentially get closer to a playoff spot via the Wild Card places.

2nd Down: Sources say that the Charlotte Hornets have signed Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson as their next head man in charge. Atkinson will remain with the team until the NBA Finals series concludes, and he will head to Charlotte after beating out Mike D’Antoni for the job. Atkinson has been a head coach before, with the Nets between 2016 and 2020, and he will be hoping this job goes better for him this time around.

3rd Down: #1 ranked Tennessee will have some work to do this weekend after they lost Game 1 of the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals at home to Notre Dame on Friday night by a score of 8-6. The Fighting Irish hit four home runs in the first four innings and held off the Vols as they attempted to come back. That means the Volunteers now will have to win on Saturday and Sunday to get to the College Baseball World Series in which they are heavy favorites to win.

4th Down: Jesus Ferreira scored four goals for the United States men’s soccer team on Friday evening as they demolished Grenada 5-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League. Looking for a striker to complete the team, the scoring performance by the forward will be a relief, though you also have to factor in the quality of competition as what the Americans will see at the World Cup will certainly be much stronger. Paul Arriola got the other goal in the runaway, and he also had an assist on one of Ferreira’s goals.
