Two-Minute Drill: Camerons Pace Open, Tiger Misses The Cut

Jonathan Grant | July 16th, 2022

1st Down: The Open has reached its halfway point, and so far there are a pair of Camerons that are on top of the leaderboard through two rounds at St. Andrews. Cameron Smith is the overall leader at -13, following up an opening round 67 with a 64 on Friday. Cameron Young, who had led after the first round thanks to a majestic 64 at the Old Course, backed it up with a 69 in round two and is two strokes behind the Aussie. Rory McIlroy remains in contention as well, sitting three off the lead along with Viktor Hovland. Dustin Johnson, one of the PGA Tour defectors, is a further shot behind as well. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, failed to make the cut in what could be his final appearance at the ‘home of golf.’ In addition to Woods, defending champ Collin Morikawa was also among the names that didn’t make it to the weekend. He is the first champ to fall short of making the cut in a decade.

2nd Down: There have been plenty of moves within the San Antonio Spurs’ organization this summer, but they will be retaining the services of Keldon Johnson as a deal was announced by his agency on Friday evening. The team have given Johnson a four-year deal that is said to be worth $80 million, rewarding the former first-rounder for a season that saw him average just north of 17 points per game across 74 appearances. The news comes after the team trade Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks a couple of weeks back.

3rd Down: Plenty of transactional news is out there currently in the world of soccer as transfers heat up, and Friday happened to be a particularly eventful day. The biggest deal appears to be that of Robert Lewandowski, with sources indicating the Bayern Munich man will be moving to Barcelona after making a very public demand to leave the club in which he had been for nearly a decade. The deal is said to be for over $50 million as the Catalans look to rebuild around the Polish goal machine. Christian Eriksen, the man who collapsed in the European Championships last year, will continue his bounce back with Manchester United, agreeing a three-year deal on Friday with the club. Another big move also took place as Toronto FC signed former Juventus man Federico Bernardeschi to a deal.

4th Down: One deal that is said to be on the ropes is that of Kevin Durant moving to the Phoenix Suns. One report states that the Suns’ matching of the offer sheet for Deandre Ayton means they are very unlikely to be able to haul in the Brooklyn Nets’ star man as Ayton can’t be traded, even if the team wanted him to be, until January. In addition to that, he has a say on if he stays or goes for an entire year, taking away a potential bargaining chip that the Nets might have wanted.
