Two-Minute Drill: Yankees Land Benintendi, LIV Gets Two-Time Masters Champ

Jonathan Grant | July 28th, 2022

1st Down: The New York Yankees have made a fantastic start to the 2022 season, but they are not content with that. On Wednesday, they made that clear by making a deal with the Kansas City Royals to bolster their outfield by adding Andrew Benintendi to their squad. The Bronx Bombers sent three minor league pitchers to the Royals for the first-time All-Star, and they will hope this ‘rental’ turns out to be a fruitful one as Giancarlo Stanton deals with injury. Benintendi is hitting .320 thus far this season, so he certainly earned his spot in LA earlier this month. He was a champion with the Red Sox in 2018, winning the World Series, so that is an interesting dynamic.

2nd Down: LIV Golf has landed another big-name golfer. Reports state that two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson is the latest name to have signed onto the fledgling golf league. At 43 years old, Watson’s best play is likely behind him, but he does bring a lot of recognition with him. He is currently dealing with an injury, so he expected to make his debut with the group around Labor Day. He has 12 wins on the PGA Tour in his career, and now he’ll be looking to add to that number on a new Tour. It was also announced on Wednesday that LIV Golf would be putting on a 14-event schedule in 2023 that will pay out $405 million along the way and will include ‘franchises’ and relegation as well.

3rd Down: England will be facing an old, familiar foe in the form of Germany in the Women’s Euro Final come Sunday. That was confirmed on Wednesday when the Germans took down France 2-1 thanks to a pair of excellent goals from Alexandra Popp. She put her first into the roof of the net in the first half before the French equalized within four minutes to take it into the break at 1-1. Her second goal came with 14 minutes remaining when she headed home to send her team to Wembley for a showdown with the hosts.

4th Down: The Baltimore Orioles have made a lot of noise of late on the field, and they made some off the field as well on Wednesday as they signed #1 pick Jackson Holliday to a deal. The son of Matt, a former Major Leaguer himself, picked up a handsome $8m- plus bonus with his deal as he sets a goal of making the majors within two years.
