Mookie Betts can affect a game of baseball in many ways. On Thursday, he showed off his talents on both sides of the ball, so to speak, within a couple of innings to underline that point. He led off in Pittsburgh with a solo home run first. An inning later, he made a running grab that caused him to spin only to nail a runner at the plate that trying to tag upon him.
That stopped a rally in its tracks, and it eventually led to Julio Urias getting his ninth win of the season. Urias did his own work at the plate, too, driving in a single that proved to be the winning run in the top of the third. The game was called after eight innings with a 6-3 scoreline. The result, a third straight win, pushed the Dodgers to 37-25, 1.5 games off the pace of San Fran in the NL West. The loss brought the Pirates to 23-38, 11.5 games behind the Brewers and Cubs in the NL Central, and it was their fourth consecutive defeat.
